  Registrar Transfer FAQ

What is a registrar transfer?
Registrar transfers involve the transfer of an existing domain name from one registrar ("current" or "losing" registrar) to another ("sponsoring" or "gaining" registrar).

Does SRSplus support registrar transfers?
SRSplus supports the transfer of .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .tv and .cc domain names provided certain restrictions are met. (See Restrictions below.) SRSplus does not currently support transfers of all ccTLDs and .name.

Why should I accept registrar transfer requests from my customers?
With over 30 million domain names registered to date, there is a significant revenue opportunity for registrars seeking to accept domain name registrations through transfers from other registrars.

What is the cost per transfer?
The standard transfer fee will be the Base Registration Fee charged per domain names within the respective TLDs. See the Pricing section for more information.

What do I get for the transfer fee? Is there an extension of the term of registration for transferred domains?
SRSplus will process your transfer request with the appropriate registry, if needed, and extend the registration term of the transferred domain name by 1 year from the expiration date of the original registration unless the 1 year extension would bring the total registration term to over 10 years. In such case, the total registration term with the extension would be limited to 10 years.

What are the restrictions on transferring domain names?

  • The domain name must have been registered for more than 60 days
  • Authorization Codes are required for the transfer of .biz, .info and .org domain names.
  • The current Adminstrative Contact must confirm the transfer request from the e-mail account listed in the Adminstrative Contact's WHOIS information
  • The current registrar must not deny the transfer request
  • The domain name must not be on a lock or hold status at the registry

How do I obtain the Authorization Code for a .biz, .info, .org, .tv or .cc transfer?
The Authorization Code must be obtained from the current registrar of the domain name you wish to transfer. The registrar may have restrictions as to who may receive the Authorization Code.

Do you communicate directly with the transferring registrant during a transfer process?
Authorization requests are emailed to the Registered Name Holder or Administrative Contact of record of the domain name registration for both inbound and outbound transfers to verify all transfer requests.

How do I transfer a domain name on behalf of a registrant as the sponsoring registrar?
Both the SRSplus API and FastTrack are designed to allow you to request a domain name transfer from another registrar. See below for the step-by-step description of a domain name transfer to a SRSplus Partner:

Step Explanation
Step 1:
Registrant Requests Transfer to a Sponsoring SRSplus Partner
Registrant elects to transfer a domain name to a Sponsoring SRSplus Partner and submits a request with the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner.

The Sponsoring SRSplus Partner collects all registrant information as required for new registrations with the transfer request
Step 2:
The Sponsoring SRSplus Partner Submits Transfer Request to SRSplus for Processing
The Sponsoring SRSplus Partner submits the transfer request and registrant information through the SRSplus Partner Manager or API tool using the appropriate API call (see API technical documentation for additional details) or manually through FastTrack

The appropriate transfer fee is placed on "pending" status from the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner's Registration Fund. If the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner does not have the sufficient balance available in the Registration Fund, the transfer request is rejected

The domain name associated with the transfer request and the status of the transfer request are made available for review in the Transfer History page of the My Transfers section of Partner Manager

Step 3:
SRSplus Confirms Transfer Request with Current Registered Name Holder or Administrative Contact
SRSplus matches the current Administrative contact and e-mail with the transferring registrant and sends an e-mail to the current Administrative Contact instructing him or her to confirm the transfer request at a secure Transfer Approval Web Page.

If no e-mail address for the current Administrative Contact can be found, the transfer request will be cancelled and the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner notified

If the request is cancelled, the transfer request is denied and the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner will be notified and the Partner's Registration Fund credited the appropriate transfer fee

Step 4:
Current Administrative Contact Confirmation
The current Administrative Contact can either (1) approve/confirm the transfer request, (2) deny or cancel the transfer request, or (3) not respond

If the transfer confirmation request is denied or not approved within 7 days, the transfer request will be denied. Upon denial, the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner will be notified and the Partner's Registration Fund credited the appropriate transfer fee

Step 5:
SRSplus Submission of the Transfer Request to the Registry
If the transfer request is for a domain name currently registered by a non-SRSplus Partner, upon confirmation by the current Administrative Contact, SRSplus submits the transfer request to the appropriate Registry

If the transfer request is for a domain name currently registered by another SRSplus Partner, upon confirmation by the current Administrative Contact, SRSplus submits the transfer request to the current registrar (i.e., proceed directly to Step 6)
Step 6:
Approval or Denial of the Transfer Request by the Current Registrar
Upon receipt of a transfer request (either from the Registry if the current registrar is not an SRSplus partner or from SRSPlus if the current registrar is a SRSplus registrar), the current registrar has 5 days to approve or deny the request

The current registrar can either (1) approve/confirm the transfer request, (2) deny the transfer request, or (3) not respond within 5 days of the transfer request

If the transfer request is approved/confirmed or not responded to within 5 days, the domain name is transferred to the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner's account with the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner being sent a notification of the successful transfer

If the transfer request is denied, the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner is notified within 9 days with the appropriate transfer fee credited to the Partner's Registration Fund

Should the applicable registry fail to approve the transfer based on the Current Registrar's approval or non-response or deny the transfer based on the Current Registrars denial, SRSplus will resubmit the transfer request to the registry

See the API Technical Documentation or the My Transfers Section of the Partner Manager for technical instructions on each step of the transfer process.

How does the transfer process work through FastTrack?
The same way that it would work above for Sponsoring SRSplus Partners using the SRSplus API, except that the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner using FastTrack would manually enter the existing or new registrant information and domain name(s) to be transferred to request a domain name transfer in the My Transfers section of the Partner Manager.

What happens if one of my registrants wants to transfer a domain name to another registrar?
Upon receipt of a transfer request from a registry or another SRSplus Partner for a domain name currently registered through you, SRSplus sends you an e-mail with the notification of the transfer request. Upon receipt of the transfer request, your registrant has 5 days to approve/confirm the request or deny the request to us (note that you will not be able to approve or deny the transfer request on behalf of the registrant unless you are listed as the Administrative Contact). SRSplus may automatically send a denial communication to the registry for transfer requests for domain names not yet registered for 60 days and in certain other situations (see below for an non-exhaustive list of reasons that are typically given by current/losing registrars to justify transfer denials).

Upon receipt of approval/confirmation or no response to us within 5 days, we will approve the transfer request. If the Administrative Contact denies the confirmation, SRSplus will notify the appropriate registry or sponsoring SRSplus Partner of such status.

Status of pending transfer requests away from you can be reviewed in the Transfer History page of the My Transfers section of Partner Manager.

Is there anything else I can do to protect domain names from unauthorized transfers?
Domain Protect is a new free feature on each new domain name registration that provides you an extra measure of protection from unauthorized domain name transfers. When turned On, Domain Protect blocks the transfer of your domain name to another Registrar. You can still renew and make modifications to the domain name registration, including legal name changes. To transfer a domain name to another Registrar, you must first turn off Domain Protect.

Domain Protect is automatically applied to all new .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .tv, .cc, .us and .name domain name registrations. You can modify Domain Protect for individual domain names in Domain Details or for all domain names when you view the full list of domain names in My Registrations.

What are the reasons current registrars can cite to deny a registrar transfer request?
Current registrars can deny transfer requests for any number of reasons, including, but not limited to:

  • 60 days have not elapsed since the initial registration of the domain name
  • Situations described in the Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy
  • A pending bankruptcy of the current registrant
  • Dispute over the identity of the current registrant

How long will a domain name transfer take to process?
The amount of time required to authorize a domain name transfer can vary significantly due to variations in the amount of time taken by the current registrant and current registrar to approve transfer requests. However, normally you should receive notification of a successful or unsuccessful transfer within 18 calendar days.

What information do I need to provide when submitting a transfer request?
At a minimum, we require the following information be provided either through the SRSplus API or FastTrack:

  • The domain name being transferred
  • Current Administrative Contact e-mail address associated with the domain name (this must exactly match e-mail of the Administrative Contact listed in the domain name's WHOIS record)
  • Administrative, billing technical contact information of the gaining registrant (the registrant initiating the transfer request)

Can the registrant change the nameserver information during the registrar transfer process?
No. Only upon a successful transfer can the gaining registrant change the nameserver information on the domain name in question.

Can the registrant (ownership) information change during or with a registrar transfer request?
Yes. You may change the registrant by inputting the new registrant information at the time the registrar transfer request is initiated.

Can I cancel a transfer request once it's submitted to SRSplus?
No. A transfer request cannot be cancelled by the Sponsoring SRSplus Partner once the request is submitted to SRSplus. The Administrative Contact may cancel the transfer when they receive the authorization request.

How can I view pending transfers both into and out of my account?
Refer to the Transfer History page of the My Transfers section within your Partner Manager. Each domain name being transferred will be categorized as follows:

  • "Pending SRSPlus Approval" - Transfer request is submitted. SRSPlus must approve transfer request by checking current registrant Administrative Contact e-mail address provided with WHOIS records
  • "Denied by SRSplus" - Transfer request has been denied by SRSplus
  • "Pending E-mail to Current Owner" - Transfer request has been approved by SRSplus.
  • "Pending Current Owner Approval" - SRSplus has sent e-mail to current registrant for approval of transfer request
  • "Denied by Current Registrant" - Current registrant has denied transfer request
  • "Pending Submission to Registry" - Current registrant has approved transfer request. Transfer request is waiting in queue to be submitted to registry.
  • "Pending Registry Approval" - Transfer request has been sent to registry and is awaiting approval.
  • "Rejected" - Transfer request has been rejected by the registry or SRSplus.
  • "Completed" - Transfer request has been successfully completed.

How can I view what has happened with an individual transfer request?
To view the up-to-date status of your transfer requests, visit the My Transfers page in your SRSplus Partner Manager and click on the Transfer ID for the transfer whose status you would like to view.

When will my account be debited for a transfer request?
After you submit a transfer request, your account will be debited by the amount of the base registration price for the TLD you are attempting to transfer. This amount will be placed into a "Pending" balance. If the transfer is approved, the Pending balance will be debited by the amount of the transfer. If the transfer is denied, the available Registration fund will be credited and the Pending balance will be credited.

Does SRSplus support Bulk Transfers?
Yes. To facilitate a bulk transfer please send an e-mail to transfers@srsplus.com.
