What is .name?
.name is the generic top-level domain (gTLD) created exclusively for individuals who wish to register their personal names as domain names and/or e-mail forwarding addresses. In addition, it is possible for entities or individuals to register a .name domain name on behalf of a fictional character, provided he or she has the rights to such fictional character's name. Registering a .name domain name will allow individuals to have an Internet address that is exclusively theirs and that will become one of the global standards for personal websites and e-mail addresses.

What .name Services are available through SRSplus?
.name Service Description
Domain Name (only) Domain Names registered on the third level using the following format:
<firstname.lastname.name> or
<lastname.firstname.name>

For pricing information, please see our Pricing section.

Do you support registrations for second level .name domains?
Not at this time.

Who can register a .name Service?
The .name top level domain (TLD) is designated exclusively for registration of personal names and is dedicated to individuals. In addition, it is possible for an entity or individual to register a .name Service on behalf of a fictional character, if the registrant legally owns the rights to the character.

Definition of a "personal name"
A personal name, in the .name TLD context, is defined as "a person's legal name, or a name by which the person is commonly known." A "name by which a person is commonly known" includes, without limitation, a pseudonym used by an author or painter, or a stage name used by a singer or actor.

Eligibility requirements
Any individual or entity is eligible to register a personal name if it falls into one of the following categories:

  • The personal name of an individual. Any person can register his or her own personal name, both as a Domain Name (John.Smith.name) or an E-mail Forwarding address (John@Smith.name).
  • The personal name of a fictional character. Any individual or entity can register the personal name of a fictional character (e.g., Ally.McBeal.name) if that individual or entity has trademark or service mark rights in that character's name.
  • Additional characters. Registrants may add numeric characters to their personal names when registering a .name Service so as to differentiate it from other personal names. For example, in the event that John Smith unsuccessfully attempts to register John.Smith.name, he may seek to register an alternative, such as John.Smith1955.name, or John2001.Smith.name.
There will be no up-front verification by the .name Registry of whether the registrant's actual personal name matches the registration. Rather, .name registrations claimed to be made in violation of the eligibility requirements can be challenged through the specially designed dispute resolution policy covering the .name TLD, the Eligibility Requirements Dispute Resolution Policy (ERDRP). For the full description of the registration restrictions for .name Services, please consult Appendix L - Registration Restrictions of the .name Registrar-Registry Agreement which can be found at the ICANN website http://www.icann.org/tlds.

Are there similar restrictions on how a registrant can use a .name Domain Name?
No. The .name Registry restrictions generally concern who can register a .name product, not potential uses of the .name Domain Name. However, please read our Service Agreement on the general terms under which your registrants agree to use their .name Services.

How do registrations, renewals and transfers of .name Domain Names work?
Registration
Domain names in the .name TLD can be registered only at the third level, in the format <firstname>.<last name>.name or <last name>.<first name>.name.

Renewal
Registrations of .name domain names may be renewed in one year increments anytime prior to expiration for up to ten (10) years, provided that the expiration date of a domain registration is not more than ten (10) years in the future. A renewal that would set the expiration date further than ten (10) years in the future will lead to the expiration date being set to ten (10) years in the future. Any remaining time will be forfeited.

Transfers
SRSplus does not support inbound transfers for .name domain names. In the event you wish to transfer a .name domain to another registrar, you will need to contact us to receive the authorization code.

  • The minimum length of the second level is three (3) characters
  • The minimum length of the third level is one (1) character
